The trek to Roopkund is most famously known by the name Skeleton Lake Trek among the thrilling as well as most mysterious trek destinations in the Himalayas of India. At 5,029 meters or roughly 16,499 feet, Roopkund is a lake snuggled amid the snow-covered mighty Trishul and Nanda Ghunti mountains. 

The skeletal remains lying at the bottom of the lake are around more than one thousand years old. It does not add only to the spooky character of this trek but also to the captivating beauty that draws one along the way.

It is quite challenging for any seasoned trekker; yet at the same time, it treats a successful trekker to an experience of solitude and serenity besides being treated to sublime beauty of Himalayan ranges.

For pilgrims and trekkers, the Roopkund trek is more than a physical journey; it is a spiritual pilgrimage that takes them through sacred valleys, alpine meadows, and remote villages, leading them to the mysterious lake whose dark history continues to fascinate.

Itinerary 8 Days

Day 1Kathgodam to Lohajung220 km · 10 hrs drive

Arrive at Kathgodam Railway Station and begin your drive towards Lohajung, the base camp for the Roopkund Trek. The scenic route passes through mountain towns, forests and river valleys before reaching Lohajung. After checking into your accommodation, meet your trek leader, complete the briefing and prepare your gear for the trek ahead.

Day 2Lohajung to Wan (Drive) – Wan to Bedni Bugyal (Trek)11–12 km6–7 hrs

After breakfast, take a short drive to Wan Village, where the trek officially begins. The trail climbs steadily through dense oak and rhododendron forests before opening into the vast grasslands of Bedni Bugyal. Enjoy beautiful views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks before settling into camp for the night.

Day 3Bedni Bugyal to Ali Bugyal6–7 km4–5 hrs

Today's trek is comparatively easier as you walk across the rolling meadows of Bedni and Ali Bugyal. The wide alpine grasslands, colourful wildflowers and uninterrupted mountain views make this one of the most scenic days of the journey. Camp overnight at Ali Bugyal.

Day 4Ali Bugyal to Ghora Lotani10 km5–6 hrs

Leave the meadows behind and continue climbing towards Ghora Lotani. The trail gradually becomes steeper as the landscape changes into rocky alpine terrain. Along the way, enjoy spectacular views of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti before reaching your campsite.

Day 5Ghora Lotani to Roopkund Lake and Back to Pathar Nachauni12–13 km7–9 hrs

Start before sunrise for the toughest day of the trek. Climb the steep mountain trail to reach the mysterious Roopkund Lake at an altitude of 16,499 feet. Spend some time exploring the famous Skeleton Lake and taking in the dramatic Himalayan scenery before descending to Pathar Nachauni for the night.

Day 6Pathar Nachauni to Bedni Bugyal8–9 km4–5 hrs

Begin your descent through alpine slopes and return to the green meadows of Bedni Bugyal. The easier trail offers another opportunity to enjoy the peaceful surroundings and panoramic mountain views before camping for the night.

Day 7Bedni Bugyal to Wan – Wan to Lohajung11–12 km5–6 hrs

Retrace your route through forests back to Wan Village. From here, take a short drive to Lohajung, where you can relax after completing the trek.

Day 8Lohajung to Kathgodam220 km · 10 hrs drive

After breakfast, leave Lohajung and drive back to Kathgodam. Your Roopkund Trek concludes with unforgettable memories of alpine meadows, towering Himalayan peaks and the mysterious Skeleton Lake.

Things to Carry

  • Waterproof trekking shoes with good ankle support, along with extra woollen socks for changing after long trekking days.
  • Thermal wear, fleece jacket, waterproof outer layer and trekking pants to stay comfortable in changing mountain weather.
  • Warm gloves, woollen cap, sun cap and UV-protection sunglasses for cold mornings and strong sunlight at higher altitudes.
  • A 40–50 L trekking backpack with a rain cover to keep your belongings dry.
  • Sleeping bag, headlamp with spare batteries and personal camping essentials if these are not provided by your trek organiser.
  • Reusable water bottles or a hydration bladder, along with energy bars, dry fruits and light snacks for the trail.
  • Personal medicines, a basic first-aid kit and altitude medication if advised by your doctor.
  • Sunscreen, lip balm and basic toiletries to stay protected during long days outdoors.
  • Government-issued photo ID, enough cash and a fully charged power bank, as facilities are limited in remote villages.
  • Trekking poles for better balance during steep climbs and long descents.
  • Camera or binoculars to capture Himalayan landscapes and wildlife along the route.
  • Small garbage bag to carry your waste back and help keep the mountains clean.
